Design with a purpose

At MATERIA we are invested in making a difference in the world; By using our experience as designers and putting our passion into the right causes we feel that little by little we can contribute. During this past year, we have had the opportunity to participate in two significant projects that are making a big difference in people's lives.

School in Nepal

A fundraiser for the construction of a new school in Nepal. This event took place early this year, together with Hope for the Nations we collaborated with other like minded individuals in the community to create a fundraising night for Nepal and now we can say with a lot of pride that the building has been completed and it is making a huge impact in the community and benefiting the children whose previous school was damaged during an earthquake. Home for the Holidays

The Second project we got involved with recently is Homes for the Holidays. The project goal was to fundraise money for the Central Okanagan Hospice Association which exists to provide quality hospice palliative care programs and services in the Central Okanagan. This is something we wholeheartedly wanted to support.  We do not know of anyone who hasn’t lost someone close to them, be it a family member, friend or acquaintance.  With such a great cause to raise money for we put together our team of designers and off we went to make this the best Homes for the Holidays tour yet.

These type of projects require a group effort and many partnerships with individuals and companies that share common goals and interests.  We are grateful that we were able to use a Spec Home we designed earlier in the year with our partners from Impact Builders, the house was lended to us to use during this project, which is a huge commitment from the builder and shows their compromise to socials causes and the community, thank you Impact Builders for your commitment and helping us to make a difference.

The project was led by our Junior designer Kristina Lutsenko, with the mentorship and direction of Heather Cousins and the entire Materia team, Kristina’s passion and dedication shows in the end result of the project.

The Concept

The original concept for this house was bold with black accents and a striking marble tile fireplace, so we embraced the black and came up with ‘A Glam Contemporary Christmas’. We wanted to take a fresh spin on the holiday favorites by incorporating matte black and champagne golds.

The Table setting was simple, yet elegant and was a combination of black charger plates, gold accented ornaments, a fresh garland runner and with a few tea light candles this table was ready for the holidays.

We had two sponsored trees in the home that we were in charge of decorating. The first tree was adorned with black and gold ornaments, black sheer ribbon, gold twigs and wrapped presents in gold, and black paper.

A fun tip is to get a friend with nice handwriting to write the names of the reindeer and holiday sayings on gift tags and add them in for fillers.

The Second tree was in the upper floor bedroom which would be great for a girl’s room and was decorated fit for a princess with white and rose coloured flowers, white feather, gold and silver ornaments. The tree skirt was a pink fluffy skirt that was the finishing touch for this holiday tree.

Thank you to our partners and sponsors without them this could not be possible:
